Transition from entrepreneurial to professional management style in SMEs – Why does it need to happen? When you started your business, it was exciting. You felt you were doing something of great importance for yourself, family – and probably the community at large. In the early days, it was tough but, in the main, it was fun. It was easier to deal with people, you knew everything that was happening in the business, you were in full control and it was easy to make those urgent, snap decisions. But, most importantly, in the early days ‘everybody was in it together’, all the employees were committed to making the business a success and everybody supported you and each other. But, as time moves on, is it still fun? Is it easy to keep control? And are you getting the opportunity to continue with your entrepreneurial spirit and drive? Bill O'Gorman, University College Cork, and Brian O'Kane, Oak Tree Press, are in the process of researching when and why founders and owner/managers change from being entrepreneurs to being managers. Please e-mail us if you would like to take part in this research and learn more about the process of transitioning from entrepreneur to professional manager.
